Jade is treasured as a stone of luck, prosperity and harmony, believed for millennia to protect travelers and draw good fortune. Chinese emperors trusted that power enough to be buried in full suits of carved jade plates meant to preserve the body for the afterlife, and its English name comes from Spanish conquistadors who saw it worn against kidney ailments.
