Black onyx is treated as a grounding stone of protection and inner strength, believed to absorb negative energy and sharpen self-control. Roman soldiers are said to have carried onyx amulets engraved with Mars, the god of war, into battle for exactly that protection, and medieval scholars later linked the stone to clear thinking and steady willpower.
